BOOK REVIEW: JENNIFER STRANGE by CAT SCULLY

“Power isn’t good or bad—it’s about how you use it.”

Any fans of YA fantasy horror interested in a riveting adventure involving a supernatural sister duo, demons, banshees, ghosts, and absolute chaos? If your answer was “hell yeah”, then JENNIFER STRANGE by Cat Scully might be of interest to you!

Jennifer Strange is a young girl cursed with the ability to summon demons that want to use her human body as an anchor to the world of the living. She is left to live with her estranged older sister Liz in Savannah, Georgia with nothing but her father’s journal of the supernatural for guidance. Throughout the story, Jennifer and her sister are constantly on the run from the spirits that yearn for a human host, and it’s up to the girls to work together, decipher their father’s journal, and gain control over powers they don’t understand.

This is a great read for those who prefer their demon summoning to be done by teenage girls with supernatural powers rather than a Ouija board or seance. Plus the story moves quickly, the demons our heroines face are pretty nasty, and nothing would be better than a Netflix series adaptation of this plot in the future—I mean how cool would that be?! As a bonus, the reader also has access to Jennifer’s father’s how-to journal on ways to summon/ banish/ identify paranormal entities! There’s also awesome illustrations between chapters which I enjoyed and felt added to the reading experience.

If I were to find any faults with the book, I’d say the characters felt a bit two-dimensional. I found many of the interactions to be choppy and the friendships / relationships underdeveloped. But this is apparently going to be book 1 in an upcoming trilogy, so there’s room to get to know our heroines more! I would definitely recommend this to folks who enjoy illustrated novels, YA horror, and prefer a fast-paced paranormal adventure over pure scares.

(3/5⭐)
